Taff Vale Railway workers who died in the First World War are now being honoured at one of Wales' busiest railway stations – Cardiff Queen Street.

A hand written roll of honour has been displayed at Cardiff Queen Street. It lists all of the Taff Vale Railway company employees who served in the war.

Arriva Trains Wales, Network Rail and HistoryPoints have now placed QR Codes near the Roll of Honour. This means anyone with a QR reader on their smartphone can find out more about the employees.

HistoryPoints are now seeking further information from descendants.

583 TVR men joined the armed forces in WW1 and their wives got 7 shillings a week. 10 shillings were given if they had children.

To see the Roll of honour, turn right after entering the station like you were going to platform 5.

What did the officials say?

Richard Martin, Station Manager at Cardiff Queen Street, said: “We're honoured to be able to remember those railway workers who gave their lives fighting for their country. They were just ordinary people like myself and my colleagues here at Queen Street and across south Wales. They were caught up in one of the most terrible wars in history. It's fitting that people can now find out a bit more about those names on our roll of honour at Queen Street on Remembrance Sunday. They can do it at any time they are using the station.”

Rhodri Clark, editor of HistoryPoints.org, said: “We are grateful to Network Rail and for allowing us to augment the TVR Roll of Honour and GWR war memorial with information about the TVR and GWR during the war and details of employees who died, all accessible on the spot using smartphones or tablets.”
