ScotRail is going to be investing millions into making sure their trains keep on moving this Autumn. They’re approaching this issue with more man hours and also new machienery.
Everyone dreads the announcement of “this train is delayed by leaves on the line” – what damage can it do
In Autumn, the hundreds of trees that line the railway in Scotland have to shed their leaves, and when a train passes over the leaves, it breaks down the leaf into a slippery coating and means the train loses traction.
The train wheels can also get covered in the coating and this can lead to a brake issue – which can lead to the train not stopping where it needs to.
What are ScotRail doing this Autumn?
Network Rail will lead a team from the middle of October and complete the following tasks as part of ScotRail’s Autumn Safety Campaign:
- ScotRail will spend £2.6million on clearing the tracks.
- 30 staff totalling 11 teams of people will be based in Inverness, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Tayside, the Borders and Fife to tackle leaf clearing.
- Seven specialist trains will be used to clear the leaf coating off the track to help with grip (covering an average of 1,500 miles a day).
- A green/amber/red warning system on Twitter each day, telling customers of any expected disruptions because of weather.
