ScotRail 385 Travels From Edinburgh To Linlithgow

ScotRail has announced that one of its new electric trains, a Class 385, has succefully completed a journey from Edinburgh to Linlithgow.

The train is still to be fitted with an interior, and completed the test run at 2am on Wednesday 18th October.

This is the first time an electric train has worked on any section of the route.

When the final safety checks have been completed, ScotRail will begin full testing of the new trains.

The new fleet of trains will enter passenger trains over the next few months and will offer passengers in Scotland with more seats and a better service between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

When introduced, the Class 385s will be initially introduced on the Edinburgh to Glasgow via Falkirk route and will run the following routes.

  • Edinburgh to North Berwick
  • South Glasgow to Cathcart Circle / Neilston / Lanark
  • Glasgow & Edinburgh to Dunblane / Stirling / Alloa
  • Falkirk Grahamston via Cumbernauld to Glasgow
  • Glasgow Central to Edinburgh via Shotts

Ian McConnell, who is ScotRails Programmes and Transformation Director, said “Yesterday’s trial was a hugely important step towards completing the electrification of the line between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Having a train run on the route is one of the final phases of the electrification process. That it has gone so well tells us that we are almost ready to begin the next stage – which is to start fully testing the new trains themselves.”

He added “We are building the best railway that Scotland has ever had. When we replace the diesel trains with the brand new, state of the art, electric fleet we will deliver enormous benefits to our customers. Cleaner, greener travel – with more seats and faster journeys will completely transform travel between our two biggest cities.”
