Network Rail are advising passengers in West Yorkshire to check before travelling as the next stage of the Great North Rail Project takes place.

The next stage is improvement works to the signalling system in in West Yorkshire.

The project will see all of the signalling changed from lineside signal boxes to the Rail Operating Centre in York.

This is a more reliable and cost effective way of signalling and the benefits will be seen across the network in the north.

The project is going be undertaken in three stages:

  • Stage 1 will take place on the 28th and 29th October 2017. Resulting in both Huddersfield and Dewsbury stations being closed.
    • During this time, no trains from either TransPennine Express or Northern will run on either dates.
    • TPE and Northern will uperate up to 25 buses an hour to keep passengers moving between Leeds, Manchester / MAN Airport, Halifax, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Bradford.
      • This will mean a change in route for TPE services.

Rob McIntosh, route managing director for Network Rail, said: “We appreciate that there is never a good time to disrupt passengers and we are advising anyone wishing travel to plan their journeys ahead of time to avoid disappointment. The signalling system in this part of West Yorkshire is approaching the end of its operational life and this investment will increase reliability, thereby reducing delays, while cutting the cost of running the railway for the taxpayer. I thank passengers for their patience and assure them that the result of the disruption will be a more reliable, efficient, modern network fit to meet the needs of the economies and communities our railway serves.”

The other stage of the project will affect Huddersfield and Dewsbury between Saturday 20th January and Sunday 21st January. Further work will take place on the Calder Valley in 2018, with more details to follow.
