On the 6th June 2017 a new station opened on the GWSR. The Halt, Hayless Abbey was originally opened in 1928, but was closed by British Railways in 1960. The project on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway was completed by volunteers in just 12 months and was opened by Lord Wemyss from nearly Stanway House.
The new station opening coincides with a new museum which has opened at nearby Cistercian Hailes Abbey, which is run by English Heritage and owned by the National Trust.
The project was possible thanks to a grant of £12,000 from the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway Trust and a further £2,500 from the Cotswold Conservation Board.
Glyn Cornish, chairman of the Trust said “It looks as if it has always been there because it closely follows the appearance of the original. It is complete with a corrugated iron waiting shelter which was recovered from Usk in Wales, identical to that which once stood on the site. It has a gravelled platform surface and even has oil lamp standards!”.
