UK Steam Locomotive Hits 100 MPH in 50 Year First

Steam Locomotive Peppercorn A1 No. 60163 ‘Tornado’ has been doing test runs on the East Coast between Doncaster and Newcastle to prove that rail tours hauled by the A1 can be done at 90 mph, rather than 75 mph.

During the test early on Wednesday morning (12th April 2017), Tornado reached a milestone of 100 mph with officials monitoring data about the speed of the loco.

Tornado is the newest steam locomotive for the UK and was built in 2008 at Darlington Works. You may recall we saw the A1 recently on the Settle and Carlise Line where it replaced Diesel Services on the line, and thousands came to see it over the three days. You can see our video below 🙂
