Northern Pacer Withdrawals To Start In 2018

Arriva Rail North (Northern) will start withdrawing its 14X ‘Pacer’ units from 15th September 2018.

The government in the UK have brought in new regulations with regards to disability. The ‘Pacers’ don’t meet the new laws and will be replaced by new trains.

First of all, five 144 two-car units will be the first to go. These should be removed from service in September 2018. Furthermore, Northern will release two pacers in October, four in November and a final two units by January 2019.

Class 142s which are also run by Northern will also start to be stood down. Five 142s are to be removed from service from November 2018. With a further 19 units by 8th December 2018.

Northen Pacers in 2019

Northern will release all pacers in 2019. Between January and October, Northern will release between one and nine units a month. By October 2019, all Pacers, run by Arriva Rail North, should have been withdrawn.
