The Settle & Carlisle Line is on track to reopen in March 2017 after part of the line suffered a landslide last December.
The Settle & Carlisle Line runs from Settle in Yorkshire, to the city of Carlisle in Cumbria, via stunning scenery and the famous Ribblehead Viaduct.
Since the landslide, trains have been terminating at Appleby, therefore, a bus replacement service has been in place.
Contractors who will install big concrete and steel structures under the railway, are now on site to start the manufacturing of the remaining parts.
The construction is costing £23million will sit below the railway and will stabilise a section of the bank above the River Eden.
Rhiannon Price, project manager for Network Rail said “The viaduct-like structure we’re building will safeguard this section of railway for generations to come. If the land gives way again, the railway will not. This is a complex repair job many months in the planning. We are now focused on getting this iconic and much-loved line fully reopened right the way to Carlisle as soon as possible, which is on schedule 31 March 2017.”
Paul Barnfield, Regional Director at Northern, said “The work carried out on the Settle to Carlisle line is nothing short of remarkable. We are delighted that, in the near future, we will once again be able to provide a full rail service to our customers travelling between Yorkshire and Cumbria on this iconic line. We know it has been a difficult 12 months for our customers, but with the completion of the engineering work, we now look forward to being able to welcome passengers for many years to come.”
Douglas Hodgins, Chairman of the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line said: “The re-opening of the line right through to Carlisle on 31st March will be a huge achievement and a boost to Anglo-Scottish traffic especially. The scale and significance of the work being done at Eden Brows cannot be overstated.”
After the Settle – Carlisle Line is fully opened, Network Rail has plans to carry out ground improvements at the bottom of the embankment below the line and above the River Eden. This will include drainage pipework, rock armour to guard against erosion when flows are high, and finally replanting of trees. Network Rail is taking massive care with regards to wildlife, including Salmon and Badger Setts, with Natural England advising on tree planting.
