Adventures With Alice on the Bala Lake Railway (4K)

This weeks video sees us visit the , in Gwynedd, North Wales.

The line currently runs from Llanuwchllyn (where all trains start and finish their journeys) to just outside Bala Town. There are plans to extend the railway into the town itself and you can read about the new plans for their extension here

The railway is situated on the old Ruabon – Barmouth Mainline which ran to Barmouth via Llangollen, Corwen, Bala, Llanuwchllyn and Dolgellau.

The heritage narrow gauge railway was opened in 1972 running a set of 2 carriages between Llanuwchllyn and Pentrepiod. Running alongside Llyn Tegid / Bala Lake, the railway calls at Llangower and other request stops along the way.

Alice is a 0-4-0 ST Hunslet locomotive built in 1902. Alice used to work at the Dinorwic Slate Quarry at Llanberis. The locomotive has been based at three railways during its preservation time, it has been at the Ffestiniog Railway (1994-1998), the locomotive then moved to the Leighton Buzzard Railway, Southern England (1998-2003), and she has been at the Bala Lake Railway (2003 – Present day) and is now owned by Julian Birley. ‘Alice' is also known for being the main character in the book ‘Alice The Little Welsh Engine' written by Pauline Hazelwood.
