The Penrhyn Quarry Railway is set to restore locomotive ‘Jubilee 1897', the locomotive is currently on display at the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum in Tywyn, and will be removed from the museum in November, and transported to Penrhyn for the work to restore her back to steam to start.
‘Jubilee 1897' is set to be on display at the Penrhyn Quarry Railway on the 12th and 13th of November. After this the locomotive will go into the workshops for the work to begin. The PQR hope to have a visiting Penrhyn steam loco to welcome her back to Penrhyn. The railway hope to have work completed in 12 to 18 months.
History of Jubilee and Penrhyn Quarry Railway
‘Jubilee 1897' was built by Manning Wardle Co, in Leeds. The loco was completed in 1897, which was the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The locomotive was delivered to the Cilgwyn Quarry in the Nantlle Valley, the locomotive was delivered along with Hunslet ‘Lilla'.
Sold to Penrhyn in 1923, Jubilee and Lilla were lowered down the incline to the WHR and taken to Dinas Junc. and were then loaded onto Standard Gauge trucks.
‘Jubilee' was withdrawn from service in June 1955, and after sitting on the Penrhyn scrap line for some years was taken to the NGRM in Tywyn.
‘Jubilee' will stay at the NGRM at Tywyn until November, when she will be moved to Penrhyn.
