Last year, we made our first visit to the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway. The railway is situated on the South Coast of England, in the county of Kent. The railway runs for 13.5 miles along the south coast from Dungeness (For the Lighthouse) to Hythe. Intermediate stations are Romney Sands, New Romney, Romney Warren, St. Marys Bay and Dymchurch.
History of the RHDR
From 1926 to 1978, the Romney Hyth & Dymchurch Railway held the record for being the ‘Smallest Public Railway In The World’ (in terms of gauge). Though, this was lost in 1982, when the 10 1⁄4 in (260 mm) gauge Wells and Walsingham Light Railway opened.
The railway has featured in several television and radio shows. This includes an episode of the BBC series The Inspector Lynley Mysteries in 2006, Harry Secombe’s Highway on 8 September 1991, Michael Bentine’s It’s a Square World in 1964 and the children’s show Rainbow.
