HS2 Only Saves 10 Minutes
HS2 could cost up to £102.7bn and may not open until 2039, transport secretary says, now thats poor value for money as in real terms it will only save 10 minutes for the journey 140 mile to Birmingham, that £7.3 million a mile.

London to Birmingham is 120 miles, so the cost is £83 million per mile.
A lot of zeros in a £100 billion.

@craig-wellum whoops looks like I missed a ‘0’ somewhere. I thought it was a bit off but I got busy on other work and didn’t come back to double check. Still £83 million a mile is very expensive for what is just another line to Birmingham and knocking 10 minutes off the time taken. We currently enjoy in my area the ability to take a train’Lancastrian’ that takes just a few minutes over 2 hours to go from Preston to London, it avoids Birmingham And runs non stop from Warrington, this would not not be any quicker with HS2 opening.

Hi Mike, the cost equates roughly to £47.0k a yard! Insane money.
The trouble is that when you get to Curzon Street, and wanto go to say Shrewsbury, you have to change stations!
So it will take longer!
Utter madness!1 -
@craig-wellum I agree it’s not good value for money. I was talking with network rail several years ago and even back then they were against the final plans and where looking at rebuilding the great central line going north to Leeds, as this was a far quicker and cheaper option, when the line got north of Sheffield a line was to branch off west using the woodhead route to Manchester Piccadilly and on towards Liverpool. The thinking behind this was that time improvements would have been negligible for trains from the midlands and time improvements would be found over longer distances with quicker trains.
