• Tornado Smoke Box Bright Work

I was told recently that the bright metal work on Tornadoes smoke box door had been painted over to better portray how it would have looked in 1962.

I have know looked closely at all the peppercorn class steam locomotives and none appear to have the same bright metal work at Tornadoe’s has.

From all the pictures seen they all appear to be back with bolt heads showing fastening onto the smoke box door.

It very much looks like the bright work on the door hinges were done just for beautician reasons.

      • As I understand it, it was usual for LNER locos to have unpainted, polished smokebox rings and hinges until the wartime austerity black livery. Post-war some retained the black paint when returned to company and later BR liveries, while others had the paint removed. All black was more common under BR as it required less maintenance.

        • @AlexF that sounds what I have seen, but I would like to see one before BR, tornado does not count as it’s only just a teenager.

@Mike Ashworth I have seen photos of 60127 and 60129 with unpainted hinges at Gateshead shed in the mid-60s. There may have been others. Like you, I’ve not seen one from the period between the war and nationalisation.

          • My memory of cleaning days on 72A are of Black, rough, non shine smoke box, (its door and number could clean up well)? But its green or black paintwork of boiler or tender that you could adjust your tie, or combe your hair in its reflection! All cleaning stopped come 1962? The slow slope to redundancy in 1967 when single manning was introduced in Bristol! From the end of 1966 you simply went to work to sit in the large messroom reading books or playing cards? I would only work 2nd man on non steam engines for 18 months or so? Being ‘eg’, Western sorts Hero, Cavalier, Duke, Prince, Marquis, Huntsman etc, We had lots! Or the 800 bullnose Warship sorts! And sort of Sulzer sorts? (They didn’t rev up so much)? plus several Hymek! All main line drivers were once cleaners of course!
