Late in 1963, 3 car DMUs turned up on several branchline’s in Devon! Their exhaust’s were vertical (between carriages) And they smoked quite a lot! Don;t know much more about them? Only that they forced many hundred’s of steam fireman to contemplate the new Rule 3 option of shed transfer! My selection was 1) Bristol, 2) was Nine Elms but cant remember the 3rd? So I would clean up my Ariel Huntmaster twin 650cc for many a long distant ride? Bendy narrow (A) roads as Motorway’s not invented yet! Try jumping from a 650cc twin bike for climbing onto a GW steamer or a Western Cavalier or Prince hydraulic diesel? Complicated times for me with not many brain cell’s! And all the times I left my motor bike on waste ground opposite Bath road shed, It was never nicked?? You couldn’t brag ‘that’ this day?? And the death up in that area of (singer) Eddy’ Cochran caused such sad memory! Must say i met Billy Fury though! (singer) And Pele (footballer) on Victoria Island nr Lagos! Oops I’m spose to be talkin DMUs Mike? Doh! (when i have a beer)? Aldi do a nice McEWANS (5quid for 4 pints)? Pele was drinking fanta?? sorry yap so much.

@nostalgia DMU’s should have been the saviour to British Railways less used lines and could have prevented a lot of the Beeching Cuts that happened later in the 60’s. To be brutally honest Steam should have ended just after the war, but with the country on it’s knees’ we carried on with steam for over 20 years, when we should have rebuilt the railways back to something a lot better, with Europe although war ravaged managed it and now puts use to shame. GBR will not real achive a return to the good old days nor a brave new world, rather just carrying on as normal using the same rolling stock and staff. We won’t do the simple and quick return on investment, but we will pay for expensive and major civil engineering that shaves a few minutes from London to Birmingham. Years ago I went with my late father on a church men’s outing to a local brewery, it was well over subscribed, but we got chance to taste plenty of beer. At the time Aldi did it’s ‘own brand’ Draft Bitter in a can, which tasted almost identical to local brewery’s Draft Bitter, so I questioned them about and apparently they made it for Aldi but used a dried hops instead of fresh,

@nostalgia I try and respond where possible, I do use my iPhone as an everyday computing device and camera, which in the main it does a good job, the one thing that it does struggle with is typing anything more than a couple of paragraphs. It looks like we are approaching the off season for steam trains on the main line as there appears to be no steam over the S & C, so it looks like I will have to try and catch the local freight and the mince pie/santa specials on the heritage lines, taking of mince pies a local company has just finished making 100,000,000 mince pies, will you ne munching through a few?
