• I have been hearing rumours from more than on source that there is going to be a ban on all steam trains running in the northwest due to the heatwave and dry lineside vegetation making a fire risk, with Diesel’s replacing Steam.😭

      • So by association your boat is a steam engine, would this apply to you, we don’t want you setting fire to the water.

        • *sigh* here we go again……

          • Having seen first hand how line-side fires spread and the effort put in by the fire departments to extinguish them in both heritage and mainline rail operations I can understand why these bans happen, as disappointing as that might be. I’m assuming what has changed since the days of steam is the fact that line-side vegetation is not cleared like it used to be – but I can’t help wandering if coal quality has a role to play?

            • @holtonpc I think the amount of lineside vegetation is mainly the problem compared to yesteryear, but was that kept in check with steam engines regularly setting fire to them.

              • @Mike_Ashworth, Many the time on goods trains we would stop for me to spoon out hot coals to track side gangs to control a ‘burn’ of vegetation! I do hope 5029 Nunny Castle makes a show tomorrow? With the Victoria to Kingswear Heritage tour! (Dawlish before noon on a low tide).
