@johns I have just seen this, filmed by Les.
TaylPSteam, David Spencer and 2 others-
I always fancied a canal boat holiday! There’s a couple of good pubs on the ship canal! But i want a longer canal!

@nostalgia A friend of mine once got lost on a canal, this was around Birmingham and he did not have a map, there is longer canals here in the UK and further afield.

@nostalgia sadly, the MSC do not allow hire boats, which if you travel along you can see why. There are few places to stop. The same could be said for the river weaver, however, hire boats are allowed, but the indefinite closure of the 150 year old boat lift is restricting access.

60 years ago, my father would have been responsible for the maintenance and any redesign of bridges like this one as Engineer Services for the former British Waterways.

@DavidFS the engineering on the canals where consider hi tech in the day, and the fact that it still working is testimony to the engineering when built.

Sorry to derail the standard subjects of this site, but it is lovely to see so many comments. We do not get many ships on the Ship Canal today. I passed two narrow boats, but saw 5 trains from the boat. It is wonderful that the trains are doing well, however, the decay of the Manchester Ship Canal, and the River Weaver, where we started is very sad.

@Mike_Ashworth no, and the cement boat stopped a few months ago. Rumours abound about a return of both. Noticed a huge queue of lorries delivering flour yesterday, which to me makes no sense. A scrap ship to Eccles is about all the freight traffic that reaches Manchester these days.

I did here that they can increase the amount of water going down the canal ten fold in when there are high river flows in the Irwell

We could collect incoming Tea or Thin Dutch brick ballast of incoming ships with dear old M7 or the ship canal do same thing much earlier from 1556 i think! (i’ll check that date)! But much older than the railways! Only two locks to the heart of Exeter! PS, The bricks were before my time! As was Brunel’s Atmospheric! Brunel often sits with me / when ive had a couple of pints?
