Mike Ashworth posted an update
Just seen this on Real time trsins
5Z31 0840 Crewe H.S. to Preston
Departing today
Locomotive Services
This service is cancelled.
This service was cancelled due to a problem with a steam locomotive (ME).

Cancelled at origin, can only assume it is something to do with fire risk

@RailAdvent they do run steam trains in hot countries.

Just noticed that. Not good news for other tours.

Nope, don’t know what the issue is as steam engines are simple beasts

With all its complex motion, You would think some bright spark might of come up with a solution for this old problem? A second blower of wet steam to dampen a sparks ardour perhaps? Do S/C boxes work? In my experiences crews simply didn’t open S/B door to enquire! You cant make hot ash vanish! And green trackside best left that way! Ascot races start today! And my Cosmos plants look ‘hansom’! Plus Aldi have a new beer! Harpers in a 500can! Very good!

@nostalgia There is such a thing as a spark arrester, the main problem is not the steam engine by the amount of vegetation at track side as in a lot of places it rubbing along the trains as they pass by, in years gone by this was kept short and tidy, now we have jungles all over the network. I will admit that some trains are worst than others with one particular beast on the East Lancashire Railway ‘Douglas’ being very prone to setting fire to the trackside.

@Mike_Ashworth, Crack open fire doors on ‘Incline’, ‘Pulling away’ etc when less drag on fire bars lesson lift of hot embers! Some may say it introduces cold air to boiler face! An old argument but it saves on coal bill as well! And Heritage don’t work engines hard! PS, Some new members like my Roses! Or maybe the long legged bird? Ref Other Adventures.

I’m intrigued by these test runs showing as Nunney Castle which is actually due to join the London Victoria to Kingswear railtour on Saturday at Taunton, with the steam loco coming from Bishops Lidyeard on Saturday morning. I can’t see anything on Realtime Trains suggesting a steam locomotive move to Bishops Lidyeard from Crewe ahead of that. So I’m left wondering if these are not rather for the long awaited Duke of Gloucester loaded test runs rather than the castle. I’m sure others are better placed to tell me if I’ve missed something or it’s just my wishful thinking!!
That said, experience tells me these test runs are by no means a certainty so let’s see what tomorrow brings, I may just check it out on Railcam at Crewe before heading out to try and see it in the flesh – if not cancelled again.

@holtonpc I am planning to catch it on Wednesday, let’s see if it turns up.
