(Not many folk)
Read my yarns, So i will knock it on the head! I thought news of the 50s/ early 1960s might break up the countless photo’s a bit? Iv’e spoken of my oiling of many types of engine when I was cleaning, and passed cleaner for firing duty! Clan lines recent run with the Atlantic coast express got me wondering of its inner bearings need of oil? As its arrival at its St David’s destination, and its visit to East yard for a drop of water, And maybe its outer motion oiling, Set me thinking its return now to London Waterloo boiler first, (owing to its transgression onto GW lines) for a Bristol Easterly run would see its inner bearing lasting a good return mileage back to London! I could judge the bearings wear on its thirst for oil? (I once put new bearings in my motorbike)! Lol! I would stand n watch 72A Exmth jct fitters pour/ run them bearing’s! I myself would oil most every engine in the fleet! My fancy was Brocklebank or Blue star! I could relax if Taw valley or 257 squadron stepped in? They tested Clan for speed! It was no faster than other’s! Over 100 MPH! And as I spread my narrow athletic very young belly over its counterbalance to poke my finger in to displace enough oil to take its fine cork! (a must)! Driver shouts (Hot or what) Lol! Warm as before! But It took a pounding back in them days! Bearings carry a smell! Hot oil is sickly only? Today’s Clan might well carry that inner bearing back to London? But i would’nt want the insurance cost! But my payment for all converted Bulleid’s was a mint Humbug sweet with a swirl in it, L** B****** the finest ACE Driver on shed!! PUT injector on he demanded! Fireman stands over him! ‘Show me another injector on this footplate’ and I will put it on shouts the fireman? That dawns on L**? Yes! Engines pushed hard to make time back then! The Beatles are formed but Eddy Cochran gets killed on his visit to the UK? Cuban missiles fitted with Nuclear bombs, Just a rehash of Iran problem today? Billy Fury (Like Ive never been gone) Is just reason to wonder where time’s gone? Our Coal n Oil deposits are 6/ 7 decades older is all! We are but the retiring few from birth!

41318 cab torch cut and last train for four mini skirted 20 yr old ladies ride the last steam engine home! At a humble 60 MPH she tries to keep her feet by grabbing hold of boiler face things! Ah, that’s bloody hot she cries to then immediately grab hold something else! How she explained her burns to her husband I shall never know? Yes, We had a grand relationship with our regular passengers! Just not blokes in trousers is all?
