Talking of Mikes Height clearance scenario, And my mind goes back to 72A and must of been late 1963? Old Maunsell 31874 had a bit of white lead con rod work done! It now stood near points on heavy lift road! Where snow ploughs were standing, We put a steam engine to shed on road 2, Then had to find someone who could drive our first 3 car DMU that had turned up! Stick it in 2 said Ralphie! On its reversal it caught the Maunsell with its door handles? There must of been a dozen separate compartments to each coach? Each with brass door handles, I heard Ping, Ping, Ping, Ping, WOW! Enough brass door handles to fill a bucket! From this episode we learnt that a DMU is wider than a steam engine! And you do not reverse one! You go ”out over”, and then simply change ends! Or the shed movement manager has yet another Cardiac arrest! All quite true I’m afraid! Shed standby duty? Oh I could tell some corkers? But wont! Terribly undignified don’t you know!

A driver would always judge his 1st coach distance for an engines run around! All done by eye!
