For me, steam railways are about more than just powerful machines — they’re about atmosphere, character, and the timeless sense of wonder they create. That’s what I set out to capture in this short film from the East Lancashire Railway’s Spring Gala – Legends of Steam.
Rather than simply documenting locomotives running from one end of the line to the other, I wanted to create something more immersive — something that reflects the feeling of being at a steam gala: the rhythm of the footplate, the hiss of steam, the rich tones of whistles echoing through the valley, and the joy of seeing these incredible engines up close.
Filmed across two days, this piece brings together the sights and sounds of some truly legendary locomotives, including:
🚂 61306 Mayflower – the star of the show
🚂 34092 City of Wells – Bulleid Light Pacific charm
🚂 34081 92 Squadron – Battle of Britain Class heritage
🚂 44871 Black Five – an LMS workhorse
🚂 11456 Beyer Peacock Tender Engine – a special appearanceI hope this film gives you a sense of what makes these events so special — not just for the railfans, but for anyone who appreciates the beauty of engineering, history, and human craftsmanship.
Thank You.
