Sunday 3rd November 2024. A great day at Dean Forest Railway for their “Royal Forest of Steam Gala” It was a very dull day so the day seemed even shorter than you’d expect for this time of the year. I’ve included a selection of pictures taken at Norchard although i did spend quite some time at Lydney Junction getting close up to the locos.
The gala featured three of its own locomotives with Uskmouth 1 having returned to service in time for the gala, while the Small Prairie 5541 was on its last outing prior to withdrawal. Completing the operational line-up was their fine looking Large Pannier 9681 and the guest loco was 6695. Looking somewhat forlorn was the Austerity tank WD152 which I guess is awaiting overhaul ….. at least I hope so!
Very well organised with the main locos taking it in turns to haul the two passenger services and a freight service, while the saddle tank enthusiastically took visitors for short brake van rides.

Peter, I missed this Gala electing to go and watch my local football team; had there been a loco I hadn’t seen before I may have bumped into you!

@Jon Hope the game was worth the sacrifice!! We’ll meet one day, I’m sure. Had planned to go to the Avon Valley Railway too but realised the distance and limited daylight would make it to tight for a day trip. For me the attraction was seeing three locos I’d not seen before and hence achieving my goal of seeing 150 operational locos.

@Jon, My word that’s an ambition Jon? What of Blue star or 31874 on Swanage! you might need the constitution of the giant land tortoise? Dont know how that compares to the whale? I awaken each morning as an optimistic pessimist? My bird hopes i wake as well! (It loves bit of apple n Aldi seeded bread)!
