(Great Central railwayana auction yesterday) Had some interesting items! I bid on a few old single line Tablets that i would take or exchange 64yr ago! Slowing on arrival at a station was ok! But with non stopping express runs the leather hoop would strike the crook of your elbow at speed and slam back against your tender! My driver would well know he overdid it a bit! Ok, he would shout! Ye’ i say and read the brass token destination! They were a heavy brass! And of the hundreds i took i only lost one! One of them at auction made £800, But the cheapest made £280! I think station Totems are best for show? But expensive. My old southern run over Dartmoor would of been nice! And a nice Jubilee nameplate (Solomon Islands) was £7000, But not sold? When i think of Leander, Trafalgar, or Galatea and such on my old Bristol shed, They were a nice engine. With a 6ft 8inch wheel. Thankfully some were saved! Some of those Standard engines i took to scrap were not that old! And one of my favs was the 90*** Austerity i would have on heavy goods! You clamber aboard at Barrow road like i did thinking, How many wheels this darn thing got? I’d love a smoke box number! Its just some nostalgic thing? An outlay with a possible greater return in years to come? Lest steam is ever forgotten?
