Fortunately on all three recent occasions to catch a steam engine in the wild has been successful. A possible excuse is that anything mechanical can and will breakdown at some point, multiple that fact by using something old I.e. a steam engine and they will have more problems that a new trap.

Train Simulation
Can anyone suggest what software/app I can use to have a go at train simulation on my windows PC. I’m only really interested – at this stage – in UK routes and obviously at my age I’m not keen on spending a fortune on a standalone setup such as Playstation or whatever ( and there’s zero chance of using my grandkid’s all-singing all-dancing gaming gadgets)

You’ll need a PC with a dedicated graphics card, and then depends on which train simulation game, the older Train Sim Classic or Train Sim World

Reply to Why the drop in Loco' identification?
In my experience the mainline steam operators often don’t identify the locos in advance. Their are probably various reasons for this including for example needing to confirm fitness to run, purposely not publicising (eg Flying Scotsman due line side crowding concerns), or simply preferring not to commit to a particular loco too soon.

Blue Peter hauling the Fellsman through Helsby

Wednesday 3rd June – Blue Peter passes through Helsby with the Fellsman, heading for Carlisle.
A bit of a railway photographer’s nightmare with a passing train threatening to spoil the view. Despite hoping for the crossing trains to both be late or early, The Fellsman arrived 2 minutes early so exactly at the same time as the Liverpool…
