71000 "Duke of Gloucester" returns to the main line.
Built in 1954 at Crewe, 71000 is a 4-6-2 Class 8 Pacific locomotive designed by Robert Riddles. This prototype, named “Duke of Gloucester” remains the only loco of this type built. In preservation the locomotive is in the care of the BR Class 8 Steam Locomotive Trust (the Trust). “The Duke” is seen here on a loaded test run. A second test run is due on 8 October covering the same route (Crewe-Chester-Wrexham-Shrewsbury-Telford-Stafford-Crewe) but on this occasion members of the Trust occupy the carriages.
