The photo demonstrates technology that must be 100 years apart – a brand new type 805 bi mode loco passing a semaphore signal at Hellifield.

Those semaphore signals may be old technology but if they fail I.e. cable breaks then they fail to danger. The modern ones don’t.

Good point Mike and neither do they attract Roumanian Organised Criminal gangs who like to dig up the electtic cabling and sell it on to the scrappie !
