My old stomping ground! 60s I would walk Bath road to Barrow road for my steam engine! Lived in GW rail hostel Redlands! Till got a flat up the Wells road! Three of us in a right dump! My mate was right friendly with a Temple mead rail employee! He forgot to mention he was married is all?

Hi Clive – Glad my Temple Meads photos brought back some memories for you. I remember seeing the Bath Road shed from the station but never managed to go inside. My trainspotting days began at Camborne in 1946/47 from when I travelled 6 days a week to Truro School for 5 years. The Penzance – Truro 8.10 was almost always hauled by 6911 Holker Hall while the return 4.15 from Truro was 1023 County of Oxford, always in pristine condition.
Always enjoyed seeing the Conish Riviera speed through Camborne to Pz. Did you cross the Tamar down to Penzance with many locos?
Best wishes – Peter Pascoe

@Pastypete, No, Only to Plymouth, Both with likes of Western diesel before single manning was introduced and earlier the old Southern route over Dartmoor! You come into Exeter St David’s from the other end! I would do that run with the 63 (22 class). But earlier it was all steam! The north Devon runs and so many Meldon quarry runs! GW had diesel long before Southern? And yet Bristol Barrow road steam ran till the end of 1965! We had the Marsh engines too! My driver and I would walk to Barrow road for our steam engine every day! But come mid 1965 we would take diesel Western’s, Warship or Hymek from Bath road ever more often! And we fireman were given a ‘locker’ and green suit as all diesel engines were double manned! Come 1967 fireman would be called to the office and paid off! So I worked for Southern, GW, And Midland railway on the old 3rd Pref rule! Most 3rd Pref footplatemen would live in a rail Hostel? Or rent a flat? Cheers Peter.
