Why the drop in Loco’ identification?
What improvements can be made regarding identification? What are the barriers to doing so? In searching Mainline Steam Movements, there appears to be a failure to identify the particular locomotives. Even on the day of travel, there’s a big decrease in identification, with the TBC comment still in place.

In my experience the mainline steam operators often don’t identify the locos in advance. Their are probably various reasons for this including for example needing to confirm fitness to run, purposely not publicising (eg Flying Scotsman due line side crowding concerns), or simply preferring not to commit to a particular loco too soon.
Realtime trains sometimes includes the loco identity once the path is activated (eg yesterdays Britannia test run)
So i guess the answer probably lies somewhere above and i guess Railadvent can only publish what is available.
So it often remains a guessing game until the last minute. I tend to look at Railcam to see whats running – for LS this generally works well with cameras at Crewe for test runs and trains heading north

Thanks for the forum post
I think Peter has covered things quite well, but just thought I’d add a couple of things.
– There is a lot of info being processed at once, with lots of social media posts and info to process to find out what actually is correct
– With regards to loco allocations, lots of them are now being kept till last minute, especially with lots of issues lately with locos in a fleet, Britannia and Tangmere being two of them
For example, Tangmere failed before it’s last tour so was a real doubt for the SSE, so we left it as TBC as we or any of our sources, could fully confirm what was going on the tour, even when the tour left, no one knew what was on it, unless you were at Carnforth to see it depart.
With regards to Britannia, which went to Carnforth, it was likely to be Britannia but it was just a testing path that could have changed last minute.
Lots of movements still coming up, and I believe as you posted this, I was actually adding in all the confirmed locos that I could so your screenshot had hopefully changed not long after posting.
