Swedish train operator SJ has chosen technology company Icomera to provide satellite connectivity on its fleet of SJ 3000 trains.

Icomera is the world’s leading provider of onboard connectivity solutions.

After successful trials and following a competitive, Icomera will provide satellite connectivity for the SJ 3000 fleet, resulting in even faster and more reliable onboard connectivity across Sweden and on international services.

The SJ 3000 fleet operates services on some of Scandinavia’s busiest routes between Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmo, Sundsvall, and Oslo, where passengers rely on reliable connectivity for work, communications, or entertainment during the journey.

Trials in 2025 demonstrated how hybrid satellite and cellular connectivity could improve performance in parts of the country where maintaining a consistently high-quality connection was a challenge.

Twenty SJ 3000 trainsets will be equipped with the technology, starting later this year, and passengers will benefit from improved connectivity from early 2027.

By combining satellite and cellular connectivity as a single onboard Wi-Fi service, there is no need for passengers to decide which connection to use, as the onboard platform automatically selects the best available network.

SJ is also working with mobile network operators to improve coverage along major rail routes to ensure passengers can receive more consistent and reliable connectivity.

This is one of the world’s first fleet-wide rollouts of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity on passenger trains operating on electrified railways, and confirms that hybrid connectivity solutions are moving from trials into large-scale operational deployment.

As well as implementing satellite connectivity, SJ in Sweden is introducing a digital infrastructure that uses an open standard to distribute reserved train tickets.

“Reliable onboard connectivity is increasingly important for passengers working, communicating or accessing entertainment throughout their journey, while also supporting a growing range of operational and customer-facing digital services. SJ has shown a willingness to lead from the front when it comes to improving the onboard passenger experience. By combining satellite and cellular technologies, they are helping demonstrate what the next generation of connected rail travel can look like”.
