In the last year, Hull Trains and Lumo have collectively helped 45 schools across the country by teaming up with the Rail Safe Friendly Programme, which has spent £483,000 teaching children how to stay safe around a railway environment.
Earlier this year at the start of Rail Safety Week, Lumo released slow-motion cab footage of a train travelling at 100mph missing a jogger on a foot crossing by a matter of seconds north of Tyneside on the East Coast Main Line.

This footage has been used to teach some older students and to act as a reminder of their surroundings at both foot and level crossings, and why it is important to use such crossings safely.
Throughout the last three years, both open access operators have supported the programme, which continues to spread the message of rail safety to children across the UK.

“Safety is always our top priority and it’s incredibly important to give young people the knowledge to stay safe.
“Our pioneering partnership with the team at Rail Safe Friendly has been ongoing for the past three years and it’s fantastic to see how well everyone engaged in the sessions.”
Earlier this year, Lumo and Hull Trains also marked Rail Safety Week by releasing shocking footage of a runner narrowly missing being hit by a train travelling at over 100mph
Richard Salkeld, Director of Communications & Partnerships at Lumo and Hull Trains,
“We’re incredibly proud of our continued partnership with Lumo and Hull Trains and the impact it is having. Reaching 45 schools means thousands more young people have received vital rail safety education. Their continued support helps us deliver potentially life-saving messages to young people and demonstrates the important role the rail industry can play in keeping communities safe.”
Stuart Heaton, Managing Director of Learn Live and Founder of Rail Safe Friendly,
Both rail companies have won many awards in recent years. Lumo now have a fully electrified fleet running on the East Coast Main Line from Glasgow to London King’s Cross. The launch of a new service from London Euston to Stirling via the West Coast Main Line began earlier this year.
Hull Trains have operated services between London King’s Cross and Hull for over a quarter of a century. Having recently transported their five Millionth passenger journey, they have won ‘Operator of the Year’ for their punctuality and affordable fares between Humberside and London.
