A new train for London Underground’s Inspiro Piccadilly Line has been demonstrated to a large audience at InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin, Germany.

Siemens Mobility, the train’s builder, and Transport for London (TfL), the train operator, together presented the new trains at a Piccadilly Showcase event during the exhibition.

Ninety-four of the new 113-metre-long, nine-car trains are on order, and 80% are being manufactured at Siemens Mobility’s £240 million Goole Rail Village in East Yorkshire.

At the Piccadilly Showcase event, following addresses from Siemens Mobility Chief Executive Officer Michael Peter, Transport for London Commissioner Andy Lord, Aglaja Schneider, Joint CEO of Siemens Mobility UK&I, attendees had a look at the train’s innovative features and passenger-focused enhancements.

These include air-conditioning, walk-through carriages, enhanced accessibility, onboard CCTV and improved onboard digital information systems.

Compared with the existing Piccadilly Line trains, the new ones have a 10% greater capacity and consume 20% less energy.

They are also fitted with Railigent platform, which enables trains to send location data and component health data in real time to maintenance depots to facilitate predictive maintenance.

As well as the new Piccadilly Line train, Siemens Mobility demonstrated several digital rail solutions, including Railigent X, Signalling X and Mobility Software Suite X, which help operators to optimise performance, improve reliability, and make better use of rail infrastructure.

The first of the new Piccadilly Line trains started a comprehensive testing programme in October 2024. Two subsidiaries of German state railway company Deutsche Bahn (DB) have been appointed to provide Quality Assurance for the new trains.

Aglaja Schneider, Joint CEO and Managing Director, Rolling Stock and Customer Services, Siemens Mobility UK&I, commented that it’s fantastic to see how far the project has come, from design and manufacturing through to testing. Teams from both organisations worked side by side to bring the project to life at Siemens’ Goole Rail Village in East Yorkshire

“These new trains will fundamentally change the experience of travelling on the Piccadilly line when they start entering service. They will become one of the first things an international visitor will experience when they come to London, be it through Heathrow or St Pancras International, and will be more energy efficient and spacious, provide CCTV and air conditioning and give customers better information during their journeys. Journeys will be more accessible, safer and faster, and the experience for our customers will be transformed.”

Andy Lord, London’s Transport Commissioner
