Freight company Maritime Transport is celebrating after winning the Sustainability and Environmental Excellence Award at the Rail Freight Group (RFG) Awards 2026. The company received the gong at the annual RFG Awards Dinner, which was held on Thursday 10 September at Hunton Park Hotel in Watford.

The award recognises the company’s decarbonisation programme, which is moving long-distance container movements from road to rail while electrifying the road haulage that it still uses. The work represents the largest clean transport investment programme in the company’s history.

It includes investment in rail-connected terminals, new intermodal services and capacity, and the national deployment of eHGVs and charging infrastructure.

Since 2019, Maritime has more than quadrupled the proportion of movements across its network that are made by rail, which has risen around six per cent to more than twenty-five per cent. It has new services that connect DP World London Gateway, DP World Southampton and the Port of Felixstowe with inland terminals such as Hams Hall, iPort Doncaster, East Midlands Gateway, Manchester and Northampton.

The company, which earlier this year signed an agreement with GB Railfreight to move its goods by rail, is developing an independent eHGV charging network. Of the 22 megawatts of power secured, 14 megawatts is allocated across twelve confirmed sites, and a further 8 megawatts secured for three more locations that are currently at the planning stage.

Once it is up and running, the network will be supplied by electricity from 100% renewable sources and will be capable of charging more than two hundred eHGVs at the same time.

We’re incredibly proud to win this award. Rail has a critical role to play in decarbonising UK supply chains, and increasing the proportion of long-distance container movements we move by rail is fundamental to that. Integrating those journeys with electric road transport at either end reduces emissions across the overall movement, and it’s encouraging to see our eHGVs now operating across a growing number of customers’ supply chains, with the high-powered charging network behind them addressing one of the biggest barriers to wider adoption.

This award from the RFG is fantastic recognition for our teams across Maritime, and for the customers and partners working closely with us to make it all happen.
