Italian freight operating company FS Logistix is to use Stadler’s bi-mode locomotive platform EUROLIGHT Dual for its subsidiary, Mercitalia Shunting and Terminal.

The eight locomotives that the company is ordering will enhance the efficiency, flexibility and sustainability of FS Logistix services across Italy’s railway network.

The EUROLIGHT Dual platform creates locomotives specifically designed for use in Italy, and the country’s main state-owned passenger operator Trenitalia bought locomotives from the same platform in 2023.

Stadler promises that the locomotives will demonstrate high performance levels. Their low weight and reduced axle load of just twenty tonnes make them suitable for operation on main lines and secondary lines throughout the country.

The locos have bi-mode traction power, with a 3 kiloVolt DC electric traction and a Stage V diesel engine. This allows them to operate on both electrified and non-electrified routes.

The Bo’Bo’ locomotive can run in electric mode wherever catenary is available. It delivers up to 3 megawatts and a starting tractive effort of 330 kiloNewtons.

It incorporates ETCS B3R2, SCMT and SSC safety systems, which make it compatible with Italy’s national network.

Bi-mode operation helps to make transport more sustainable contributes to more sustainable
transport, ensuring lower fuel consumption, emissions and noise.

The locos also incorporate regenerative braking, which feeds energy back into the overhead line.

Stadler, FS Logistix (via its subsidiary Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal), and Trenitalia will deliver a presentation of the new EUROLIGHT Dual locomotive at InnoTrans 2026.

The acquisition of eight EUROLIGHT Dual locomotives is part of an overall investment
programme of approximately EUR 1 billion and will expand our availability of modern, efficient
and flexible assets across the Italian network. Through these investments, we also aim to reduce
the environmental footprint of logistics operations and make rail and intermodal transport
increasingly competitive alternatives to road transport.

Sabrina De Filippis, Chief Executive Officer of FS Logistix
