The Apedale Valley Light Railway in Newcastle under Lyme in Staffordshire has issued an update on the line-up for its gala on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September.

The Railway has announced that the Andrew Barclay engine ‘Cegin’ will be the guest locomotive.

While it has appeared at other light railways, this will be the first time that this loco has been to Apedale. It is a historic two-foot gauge 0-4-0WT steam locomotive and was built by Andrew Barclay & Son in 1931.

Cegin worked at the Penrhyn slate quarries in North Wales, alongside Apedale resident locomotives ‘Stanhope’ and ‘Ogwen’.

The gala’s steam locomotive line-up will be these three locos, plus ‘WOTO’, Orenstein 5662, recent acquisition ‘Jennie’, Hunslet 1215 (WDLR303) and Hudswell Clarke 1238.

The latter two will run only if they pass their boiler exams.

Tickets for the event will be available to buy at a price of £8 for adults and ‘kids for a quid’ (£1).

However, while these tickets cover admission to the site, they only entitle the holder to a single ride.

To be able to take unlimited rides, visitors will need a Day Rover ticket, which will be available at a price of £25 for adults and £12 for children. Concessionary prices – for example, HRA passes – will not be valid.

On both the Saturday and the Sunday of the event, trains will run from 11:30 until 16:00.

On the eve of the gala – Friday 18 September – Apedale’s Joey Evans will be running a photo charter with a ‘Penrhyn’ theme, featuring locomotives that used to work at the quarries.

Cegin, Stanhope and Ogwen will all take part in the charter.
