Although most train services will run as usual over the August Bank Holiday, some services will be disrupted because of engineering work, whilst East Midlands Railway (EMR) services will be affected by industrial action.

The East Coast Main Line south of Peterborough and Royston towards London will be closed from 10 pm on Saturday, 29th August until 8 am on Monday, 31st August.

Most trains will be replaced by buses, but a limited London North Eastern Railway (LNER) service will operate from Newcastle to Bedford, where connections can be made to Thameslink services onto London St. Pancras.

In North Wales, engineering work near Wrexham, Gobowen, Bobbinswood, and Hawarden Bridge and between Shotwick, Dee Marsh Junction, Weston Rhyn, Ruabon, and Burton, will mean trains between Wrexham and Bidston and Wrexham and Shrewsbury will be replaced by buses.

HS2 engineering work in Birmingham will affect train services between Birmingham New Street, Derby, and Nuneaton, will see buses replacing trains between Birmingham New Street, Water Orton, and Coleshill Parkway.

In West Yorkshire, Network Rail is upgrading Brotherton Bridge near Knottingley and relaying track at Sherburn-in-Elmet, which will affect some Northern and TransPennine Express (TPE) services, with buses replacing trains between Selby and York/Leeds/Micklefield, and between York and Moorthorpe.

In Scotland, work that is continuing until Monday, 14 September will affect services between Glasgow, Ayrshire, and Dumfries and Galloway.

East Midlands Railway’s (EMR) services between London St Pancras and the East Midlands will be affected by RMT industrial action on Sunday, 30th, and Monday, 31st August.

Passengers should travel only if necessary on that route on those dates, as services will be extremely busy and there may be queuing systems in place at some stations.

Because of the industrial action, LNER tickets cannot be used on EMR train services, and EMR tickets will not be valid on LNER train or bus replacement services on Sunday, 30th August only.

Although the industrial action continues on Monday, the East Coast Main Line will then have reopened.

Elsewhere, work is continuing to reopen the railway at Lewes following the derailment near there earlier this month, with reopening scheduled for Tuesday, 1st September.
