Siemens Mobility is implementing its S3 Passenger platform to modernise the ticket sales infrastructure at South American train operator EFE Trenes de Chile for EFE Central’s mainline service.

Developed by Siemens’ subsidiary Sqills, S3 Passenger is an AI-enhanced Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform for dynamic pricing, reservations and inventory management. It went into service in July, just six months since development started, and now provides a faster way for passengers to buy train tickets and plan their journeys.

The S3 Passenger project has modernised the digital structure of the major services operated by EFE Central, and aligns its technology with leading operators worldwide such as Renfe of Spain and SNCF of France.

With the new system, passengers have access to various options when purchasing tickets, changing their bookings or requesting assistance. It also allows passengers to add extra services such as requesting an additional baggage allowance, choosing a window seat, booking a meal, upgrading a seat, or purchasing tickets for connecting services. Passengers can also book spaces when they require dedicated areas, such as for wheelchairs.

The system also allows EFE to issue vouchers and run promotional fares, and replaces manual processes such as cash management at stations.

Earlier this year, Siemens completed a £61 million upgrade of signalling in Carlisle, and in May, it was awarded a $390 million contract to modernise one of the lines on New York’s subway network.

“Every journey begins long before boarding a train. It begins with planning, with buying the ticket, and with the peace of mind of managing every detail with ease. That is why we are renewing the way people engage with rail – offering a simpler, more comfortable and more personalised experience, and moving towards self-service for tickets with an improved after-sales experience. This new platform lets us move towards a more modern, inclusive service, centred on the needs of our passengers.”

Paula Fernández, Passenger Director, EFE Central, who led the S3 Passenger implementation project.
