The North Norfolk Railway – known as the Poppy Line – is to host its Steam Back to The Forties weekend on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September.

It has held this event in previous years, and it has proved to be very popular.

During the weekend, the line’s three stations – Sheringham, Weybourne and Holt – will host live music, historical displays and wartime fashions.

There will be presentations on cooking on rations, and a working, vintage threshing machine.

Classic vehicles on display will include historic cars, military vehicles and vintage fire engines, plus a full-size replica of a Spitfire.

There will be a range of trade stalls that will sell vintage clothing, jewellery, accessories, ephemera and homewares.

There will also be a selection of stands selling food and drink.

Five steam locomotives will operate to a timetable during the weekend, with trains running every half hour.

The Railway plans to operate engines of types that would have run regularly in the 1940s. These are likely to include N2 No. 1744, which has been overhauled recently and will be paired with LNER teak-bodied Quad-Art coaches.

Hunslet Austerity No. 22 and WD 2-10-0 No 90775 The Royal Norfolk Regiment will represent two contrasting wartime designs, and 16” Hunslet “Newstead” and ex-GWR 42XX, No 4277 “Hercules” will also run.

As well as the passenger trains, the event will include a demonstration goods train running around Weybourne Station, in recognition of the importance of freight rail services in the 1940s.

The event will also include a flypast courtesy of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Club.

Tickets are fully inclusive, covering unlimited travel on the trains, entry to all three of the Railway’s stations and the main exhibition field at Holt.

Visitors buying tickets before 13 September will benefit from a discount of 15%.
