Hitachi Rail has been awarded a contract to update the fare collection system on the Mass Rapid Transit system in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Working in partnership with PT Softorb Technology Indonesia, Hitachi Rail will update the fare collection system for the existing 13 stations of Phase 1 of the PT Mass Rapid Transit Jakarta (Perseroda).

Under the contract, the infrastructure for collecting fares will be modernised at all 13 stations, with more than 200 Automatic Fare Collection gates being replaced so they can accept various types of tickets.

As well as improving reliability and operational efficiency, the upgraded system will support seamless fare collection to help provide Jakarta with a fully integrated transport network.

The updated system will support the use of contactless bank cards, QR-based e-wallets, prepaid bank cards, paper tickets, and mobile QR tickets.

Hitachi Rail already collaborates with MRT Jakarta on other projects, and this contract emphasises the company’s reputation and expertise in the technology required for advanced fare collection solutions on modern urban transit systems.

Through this project, Hitachi Rail hopes to demonstrate that combining technological innovation with operational excellence will set a new benchmark for smart mobility in the city.

In the UK, the Hitachi factory at Merchant Park in County Durham built the Azuma train used by London North Eastern Railway on the East Coast Main Line, and has a presence in many other overseas markets Among these are the installation and commissioning of advanced signalling solutions at two railway stations in Romania for Romania’s railway operator CFR S, and has established a centre of excellence in Poland for the design and construction of high-speed trains.
