Publicly-owned train operating company Greater Anglia has finished its upgrade of the lighting in the multi-storey car park at Harlow Town station in Essex.

The upgrade work cost £10,000, and forms part of Greater Anglia’s ongoing commitment to providing improved facilities, safety and security for passengers travelling on its network.

Earlier this year, Harlow Town was one of twenty Greater Anglia stations to have contactless ticketing installed.

An average of just over five thousand passenger journeys are made through the station each day. The station is fully staffed and has CCTV.

Harlow Town station car park has a total of 649 spaces, 18 of which are accessible spaces set aside for disabled drivers. Some transport guides give an overall total of up to 731 spaces, but these are counted differently or include nearby facilities. Greater Anglia’s website includes a facility to see how many car parking spaces are available at any given time.

The upgrade to Harlow Town station’s car park lighting included replacing ageing floodlights with new LED fittings. The new lights use significantly less energy than those they replaced, which will save the operator money on running costs and support its goal of running a more sustainable railway.

Workers also upgraded the car park’s cable management system, which will help to reduce the risk of faults and keep the car park environment safe and well-lit.

Greater Anglia carried out the project as part of GBR Anglia, the group of publicly-owned railway organisations in the region. GBR Anglia brings together c2c, Greater Anglia and Network Rail Anglia, and is a step towards the reintegration of the national railway network under Great British Railways.

“This £10,000 investment provides a safer and more secure environment for everyone, whether they are catching an early train, returning late in the evening or travelling during the winter months.

“Upgrading the cable infrastructure at the same time will also help ensure the car park remains reliably well lit for customers for years to come.”
