North Yorkshire’s Wensleydale Railway is inviting visitors to “roar into a prehistoric day out” at its Dinosaur Day on Wednesday 5 August. The event will run from 11am until 3pm.

Children on their school summer holidays will enjoy spending time spotting dinosaurs along the Railway’s route, through Leeming Bar, Bedale, Leyburn and Scruton. There will be family fun with a dinosaur theme, which will include a trail, games, toys, mocktails and lucky bags, plus the opportunity to make badges and masks, and to decorate biscuits.

Every Wednesday in August, Wensleydale Railway is hosting a heritage activity day. At each event, kids travel for just a pound.

The Dinosaur Day on Wednesday 5 August will be followed by A Day at Work (Wednesday 12 August), Engines Up Close (Wednesday 19 August) and Teddy Bears’ Picnic (Wednesday 26 August).

Tickets for Dinosaur Day are available online here. The ticket covers child entry for Dinosaur Day only – adults will need a travel ticket to Scruton, which they can also buy from the website.

Events with a dinosaur theme are popular with heritage railways, with several having held such events already this year, including Downpatrick and County Down Railway in Northern Ireland and the Spa Valley Railway in Kent.

The Wensleydale Railway is a standard-gauge heritage railway which operates in Wensleydale and Lower Swaledale in North Yorkshire. It runs along a section of line that was built in stages by different railway companies. Originally, it went as far as Garsdale railway station on the famous Settle-Carlisle line.

It has operated as a heritage railway since 2003, running for a distance of 22 miles (35 km) between Northallerton West station, which is around a 15-minute walk to Northallerton station on the East Coast Main Line, and Redmire.

Earlier this year, Wensleydale Rail held its annual Diesel Gala, and will run further special events later this year.
