£3.7 million has been invested in Network Rail’s Morpeth maintenance delivery unit (MDU).

Over the last 7 months, a full refurbishment has been carried out by Wernick Refurbished Buildings, making the building more sustainable and up to date.

Refurbishing the existing building saved money, materials, waste and the amount of carbon emissions was reduced.

Following the work, the building now has triple-glazed windows, with better insulation, a heat pump, responsive lighting and solar panels.

Outside the building itself, there are electric vehicle charging points in a new car park, improved lighting and a biodiversity net gain garden.

“We’re absolutely delighted with the huge improvements delivered at our MDU at Morpeth. Network Rail’s vision for the future is a simpler, better greener railway, the new facilities are a significant step in that direction and really appreciated by our teams.

“The project has demonstrated how modern refurbishment can deliver high-quality, future-ready infrastructure in a cost-effective and environmentally responsible way.
