Work is continuing on the new-build express steam locomotive LMS Patriot Class No. 5551 ‘The Unknown Warrior’ at Tyseley Loco Works.

Following the last update in May, the LMS-Patriot Company has issued a progress report.

It has tested all the remaining weld repairs on the frames for defects, and has found no faults. The frames will not need any further testing.

The company has also fitted all 12 spring hanger brackets, and has removed the temporary bolts on the front platform and side plate support brackets and replaced them with rivets. It is fitting the left-hand and right-hand platforms’ support angles with countersunk rivets, and will dress them to ensure a flush finish.

The company has also completed trial fitting of the steam brake cylinder and bracket on the dragbox, in preparation for refitting the dragbox in the rear of the frames.

The project to build the locomotive was inspired by centenary commemorations of the First World War. The project to build the red-painted loco was launched in April 2008 and was initially intended to be completed in 2018. The two main frame plates were cut in March 2009, at Corus Steel in the West Midlands. The locomotive was later named ‘The Unknown Warrior’ when a competition was held in Steam Railway magazine.

Designed by Sir Henry Fowler, the Patriot Class express passenger steam locomotives were built for the London Midland and Scottish (LMS) Railway. A total of 52 were built, the first in 1930 and the last in 1934.

42 of the locomotives were built at the LMS Works in Crewe, and the remaining ten were built at the LMS Works in Derby.

Between 1946 and 1948, 18 of the locomotives were rebuilt to create the LMS Rebuilt Patriot Class.

The company plans that once completed, LMS Patriot Class No. 5551 ‘The Unknown Warrior’ will operate as a working memorial. It will make appearances both on static display and hauling heritage trains on tours and at special events.

More money is still needed to complete the project, and the company welcomes donations. Supporters can donate here.
