The Mid Suffolk Light Railway, known as The Middy, will be hosting a series of events in August.

The Railway, which is the only standard-gauge heritage railway in Suffolk, will run vintage trains and additional attractions every Sunday and Bank Holiday.

Sunday 2 August: Steam Railway Day & Land Rover Owners visit

Alongside steam train rides, the railway will host a display of military and civilian vehicles, which is hopes will provide visitors with a view of how many changes have been made to the design of the iconic Land Rover. Production of the Series 1 Land Rover began in 1948, inspired by jeeps used in World War 2. It was one of the first 4-wheel drive vehicles designed for civilian use.

Volunteers at the Railway, which is known as ‘The Middy’, will provide vintage train rides in Victorian
coaches.

The Middy’s usual facilities will be available, including the Museum, Restoration Shed visits and real ale bar.

Sunday 9 August – Steam Railway Day & Stonham Barns Big Bus Day

The Middy will run a shuttle bus service to and from the Stonham Barns Big Bus Show, organised with the Eastern Counties Bus Preservation Group.

Bus rides to Stonham Barns are free, and Middy visitors can benefit from a 40% discount on entry to the Big Bus Day.

The Old Ram Vintage Tractor Club will display machines from farms in the past.

Sunday 16 August – Steam Railway Day Plus Vintage Commercial Vehicles & Royal Enfield Owners Visit

Visitors can enjoy viewing a selection of vintage commercial vehicles, including The Middy’s 1934 Dennis 4 ton flatbed. The Royal Enfield Motor Cycle Owners Club will also be visiting.

Sunday 23 August – Model Mania & Hornby Collectors Day

The Middy’s annual celebration of models will include the Hornby Collectors Club, which will be displaying layouts of Hornby and Dublo brand trains.

The Thurrock Scale Model Club will provide table-top exhibits, and the Middy’s Workshop Manager will have military models on display

Sunday 30 and Monday 31 August – Road & Rail Steam Gala

The bank holiday weekend marks the end of The Middy’s summer season.

The Railway will have two steam locomotives running, and visitors will also be able to view a selection of road traction engines, both full size and models.

Previously this year, The Middy has hosted events including a Vintage Bus Day and a 1940s weekend.
