As an antidote to the heatwave, Great Western Railway (GWR) is freezing rail fares until March 2027.
The savings apply to Standard Class Season Tickets, Anytime and Off-Peak tickets. As well as the ‘ Big Rail Fares Freeze’ on ticket prices, it is offering other options to save money when buying train tickets.
Along with the freeze on fares, there are other ways to save on train travel this summer, including joining GWR Rewards, booking ahead with advance tickets, using a Railcard, and travelling together with GroupSave.
- GWR Rewards is free to join and provides benefits from the first journey, including 40% off a future qualifying journey, a free hot drink and onboard discounts, and those who travel more qualify for free tickets and First Class perks.
- Advance tickets provide some of GWR’s lowest fares, with savings of more than 50%. They are available when booked early, such as London Paddington to Bristol starting from £25, £32 to Cardiff, and £41.50 to Plymouth.
- Railcards are available for young people, families, couples and seniors, and provide up to one-third savings on most fares.
- GroupSave saves one-third on selected Standard Off-Peak fares when groups of three to nine adults travel together.
Other savings are available through Family Tickets, Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak, and Long Weekender, which saves more than 50% versus an Anytime Return, for travel out on a Friday or Saturday and back on Monday.
Great Western Railway also offered fare savings last September, when it partnered with Seatfrog to launch Secret Fares that offered savings of up to 50%, and in January this year, when 225,000 train tickets went on sale at up to 50% off.
