Train operator ScotRail has revealed its plans to provide extra capacity for train travel for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Network Rail has already been carrying out engineering work to prepare the network for the demands of the Games and other summer events.

After taking place in Birmingham four years ago, the Games have moved north of the border to Glasgow, where they will begin with the opening ceremony on Thursday 23 July and run until Sunday 2 August.

Events will take place at venues including the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and Arena, Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, and the Scottish Event Campus (SEC).

One of the slogans of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games is ‘Be All In’, and ScotRail is taking inspiration from that to go ‘all in’ with its extra capacity.

The operator will add a total of 1,452 extra carriages to services running during the Games. This will mean that there will be more seats on the rail routes serving the Games venues.

ScotRail will operate extra services calling at Dalmarnock, Exhibition Centre and Scotstounhill, which are the nearest stations to venues, which will help spectators, volunteers and workers to get to the events. There will also be more services in the evenings to help passengers get home.

Additional ScotRail staff will be on duty across its network.

The operator anticipates that its services will be busier than usual during the Games, so is urging passengers to plan ahead, buy tickets before travelling, check their journey before travelling, and allow more time.

The Games will involve 3,000 athletes from 74 countries competing in ten sports.
