Train operator Southeastern is inviting passengers in Hastings, Battle and across East Sussex to vote for their preferred name for a train inspired by the story of 1066.

The Bayeux Tapestry depicts the events of the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, when armies invaded from France and which reached its climax in the Battle of Hastings. It is currently visiting Britain, and will be on display at the British Museum from September this year until July next year.

Southeastern is supporting the Bayeux Tapestry’s arrival at the British Museum, including by providing 1,066 free rail tickets for schoolchildren from Hastings and Rother to visit the Tapestry on display.

The operator is also inviting passengers, railway workers and local residents to have a say by voting for the name of a Class 375 train. The train will carry artwork inspired by the Tapestry.

Voting opened on 15 July at Hastings and Battle stations, and will continue until Saturday 25 July.

Southeastern has provided a shortlist for people to select from, of the following names: Norman, King Harold, Senlac (the location of Harold Godwinson’s deployment of his army for the Battle of Hastings), and The Conqueror.

Visitors to Hastings and Battle stations will be able to collect a token and cast their vote at the ballot boxes located on the station concourse. Southeastern has made around 10,000 voting tokens available.

The winning name will be announced later this summer.

Battle station had improvements carried out two years ago, while the Hastings line has also benefited from recent investment.

“Customers travelling through Hastings and Battle can now take part and have their say in naming one of our trains, linking their journeys with the area’s history.

“The Battle of Hastings is known around the world, so it’s fitting that residents have the chance to choose a name celebrating the area’s remarkable heritage.

“We’re looking forward to seeing which name captures people’s imagination, while helping local schoolchildren experience the Bayeux Tapestry for themselves at the British Museum.”
