A Gateshead couple swapped wedding-day tradition for a journey on the Tyne and Wear Metro after taking inspiration from a growing trend on New York’s subway system.

Laura and Aaron Capon travelled by Metro from Gateshead to Haymarket before tying the knot at Newcastle Civic Centre. The pair turned heads during the trip, with fellow passengers spotting them in their wedding attire and stopping to offer congratulations

Laura, who runs a social media business, shared the journey with followers on her food and lifestyle Instagram account (@geordie.scran) where a video of the trip has already attracted more than 150,000 views.

Their choice reflects a trend in New York where couples are opting for subway celebrations as a spontaneous and budget-friendly alternative to traditional wedding transport and venues.

“It was really good fun getting the Metro to our wedding. We both loved it. It is something a bit different.

“I had seen the trend over in New York where couples are swapping the more picture-perfect settings for the subway, and in some cases, they actually get married on the train. We really wanted to recreate that, but on our own Metro system here.

“I wanted the most Newcastle way possible to get married, so the Metro really had to play a part on the day.

“We opted to travel to and from the register office with just our videographer in tow. A few passengers were coming over to say congratulations, which was lovely. I even had messages from people after the wedding saying that they had seen us on the train. It really was a case of from the Metro to matrimony.”

“I loved getting the Metro to the wedding. It was a memorable experience.

“It was a Friday morning so there were still people on the train heading to work and university. It brought a smile to people’s faces. We were in our own little bubble that morning, but it was great that so many people came over and said we had helped to make their day.”
