Network Rail and c2c (now operating together under the GBR Anglia banner) have issued a warning that passengers using Chalkwell station will soon see changes to access routes as work progresses on a major project to provide step-free access.

This is a key stage in the Access for All scheme, with the installation of a temporary footbridge required before the existing station footbridge can be removed. The current structure must be taken out to make way for new lift shafts and the foundations of a replacement footbridge.

Engineering work means Chalkwell station will be closed to customers on the weekends of 6-7 June and 20-21 June.

During those periods, rail replacement buses will operate between Leigh-on-Sea and Shoeburyness, and passengers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys.

The Ridgeway, the road outside the station, will also be closed between 11 pm on 17 June and 6 am on 24 June to allow delivery of materials for the temporary bridge. A signed diversion route will be available.

To keep the station open and maintain access to London-bound services between engineering closures, a temporary footbridge linking the two platforms will be installed.

The temporary footbridge is expected to open on 22 June, when access to the existing station footbridge will be withdrawn and passengers redirected via a temporary ramp from the ticket hall to Platform 2 before crossing to Platform 1.

“We’d like to thank passengers and the local community for their patience while we continue our work to improve accessibility at Chalkwell station.

“The temporary footbridge and new walking route will help us keep customers moving through the station while we carry out the next phase of the project safely.

“This is one of the enabling stages needed to create space for the new lifts and replacement footbridge, so passengers may start to see more visible changes at the station as the project moves forward.”

Joe Kennedy, infrastructure director for GBR Anglia.

Responses

  1. What about Stanford-le-Hope and a brand new railway station at Purfleet to replace the existing station in Purfleet. And a new station at Beam Park between Dagenham Dock and Rainham in East London. Plus with Limehouse getting some improvements which could see lifts installed on platforms 1 and 2 (c2c).
