The Safer Railway Scheme has awarded a rating of 94 per cent to ScotRail for its work in safeguarding, security and protection of the public.

The Scheme was launched last month, and its assessments are carried out by British Transport Police and the Department for Transport.

The publicly-owned Scottish train operator scored high marks for its consistent work to tackle violence against women and girls, prevent suicide, and protect the public. It was also recognised for working with partners and looking after staff welfare. This result comes at the same time as ScotRail also received high marks for customer satisfaction.

The accreditation scores were released during Rail Safety Week, which began on Monday 15 June and ends today (21 June). During the week, ScotRail ran a campaign among its passengers, urging them to “travel well, travel safe” this summer.

During Rail Safety Week, ScotRail is publicising advice on how to stay safe on its stations, trains and social media channels. It is also working internally to support staff to stay fit, focused and ready to assist passengers.

The operator is reminding passengers that they can take small actions that can enhance safety while travelling by rail. More people travel during the summer period, going on days out, events, holidays and evenings with friends and family – and to the country’s world-famous Edinburgh Festival.

ScotRail is running a ‘Fit for Summer’, in which it is urging passengers to drink sensibly, keep themselves hydrated during hot weather, use a help point or approach staff if they feel unwell before getting on a train, and to plan their journeys in advance.

“Safety is at the heart of everything we do, and we’re proud to have been recognised through the Safer Railway Scheme assessment.

“We have strong partnerships with British Transport Police, Network Rail, and others across Scotland’s Railway to keep people safe, and customers have a role to play too.

“Whether it’s drinking sensibly, staying hydrated, or asking for help if you feel unwell, small actions can help keep everyone safe.

“With our ‘Fit for Summer’ campaign now underway, our message is simple: travel well, travel safe, and help us keep Scotland’s Railway safe for everyone.”
