Following a year’s tour of the country as part of Railway 200 celebrations, the Inspiration Train has welcomed its last visitors and left its final destination.

The train, a museum and interactive exhibition on rails, offered members of the public the opportunity to learn about the past, present and future of railway travel. Over the past 12 months, the Inspiration Train has welcomed over 104,000 people on its 12,000-mile tour to 65 destinations across Great Britain.

The train received a £250,000 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the displays on board the train, while Porterbrook funded the standout liveries, which were applied to each coach on the train.

Almost a year to the day since Inspiration left London Paddington for its first stop at the Severn Valley Railway, the climax of its year-long tour finished on the Yorkshire coast at Scarborough on 22nd June 2026.

The train’s visit to Scarborough also hosted an extra exhibition as artist Glynis Dray displayed 50 watercolour artworks, each one showing the train at a different destination during its nationwide tour.

Several people turned out to visit the train among a carnival atmosphere, which also included visits to the cabs of the GB Railfreight locomotives that have hauled the train.

Before closing, those who organised, designed and created the train, along with previous visitors, came to visit it one more time and say their goodbyes before ‘Inspiration’ departed on its final journey.

Before the train departed, an emotional Railway 200 Programme Manager, Emma Roberts, announced that two of the coaches had been preserved. The interactive Wonder Lab on Wheels coach will return to Shildon for display in the world’s first railway town, and will be a welcome addition to the museum. The Your Railway Future Coach will be heading for Melton to be based at the test track facility. It will connect visitors with future opportunities within the rail industry.

We’re also hoping to incorporate it into our school programme too, helping address the STEM gap and engaging children with experimentation and problem solving in a fun and creative way.”
