A new maintenance delivery unit (MDU) at Barnetby has been opened by Network Rail as part of an £8.8 million investment.

The site provides a base for maintaining the network, while putting sustainability at its core.

The two-story building has been designed under Network Rail’s Greener Railway strategy.

The structure has reduced carbon emissions by incorporating air-source heat pumps, solar panels, and triple-glazed windows.

The building has a range of rooms fit for the staff on site, with over 100 parking spaces and 22 electric vehicle charging points.

Additionally, biodiversity net gain was achieved during the project due to landscaping work, planting trees and other flora and installing bat boxes.

“Our new maintenance delivery unit at Barnetby is a significant investment in our colleagues, our operations and the future of the railway. It provides our teams with modern, sustainable facilities while supporting a key route that underpins both freight and passenger services across the region.
